Emulators

The Atari 5200 was never as popular as its predecessor, the Atari 2600, but did have quite a cult following in its time. The Atari 5200 is comparable to the Colecovision in overall performance, but never was as popular. The emulators contained here seem to be one of its only legacies.

Rainbow v1.4 (MacOS)

Rainbow is a well known 5200 emulator that supports the 400/800 w/48k RAM, 800XL w/64k RAM, 130XE w/128k RAM, and the 5200 games console. Features are full screen support, cartridge support up to 16k including SuperCartridges, 2 virtual drives which can read single/enhanced images, true Atari 256 colors, full keyboard support, support for 4 channels, 4 joysticks, and 4 paddles! Plus much much more! Unfortunately, most of these features are only in the shareware version which may be registered with the information contained in the documentation.

Rainbow '95 Demo v1.36 (Windows 95/NT/DX) Rainbow '95, is a port of the Macintosh Rainbow emulator by the same author. Read the Rainbow information for more specifications.

Pokey v0.62 (MS-DOS) Pokey is a freeware Atari 5200 emulator that is a tad slow, but is freeware. Updates on this emulator look unlikely as indicated by its last release date.

Virtual Super System v0.60 (MS-DOS) Even though Virtual Super System does contain most features included with all other Atari 800/5200 emulators, it is freeware, which is always a virtue.

XL-it! v0.16 (MS-DOS) The author of GenEm has created an Atari 800/5200 emulator that uses real sound samples used to give this emulator incredible sound quality!
