Emulators

The Atari 2600 had an incredible cult following, and its emulation following is equally as good! With great freeware emulators such as PC Atari, the Atari 2600 emulators are well rounded and easy to use. Make sure to also check the Atari 5200 emulator page for emulators for Atari's upgraded 2600 system.

A26 v0.15b (MS-DOS)

A26 is an incredibly small emulator that was coded in pure Assembly language. A series of emulators that have similar characteristics have been released like NESA and many of the other emulators on Paul's support web page. Full source is also available on the Atari 2600 Source Code page.

PC Atari v1.5 (MS-DOS) PC Atari is an excellent freeware Atari 2600 emulator that includes a built in debugger, assembler, front end, and help system. As far as emulation goes, lightning fast emulation, and a high compatibility rate make this emulator one of the most popular Atari 2600 emulators!

Stella v0.6 (Linux) Stella for X-Windows and Stella for Linux are the bases for many ports of Stella to all different types of operating systems, and are the first available Atari 2600 emulators. Stella v0.7 with many optimizations and improvements will be released shortly. (Check the Stella Homepage for information).

Stella v0.6 (MS-DOS) Keith Wilkins has ported Stella to MS-DOS and has included several homebrewn games to test!

Stella v0.61 (OS/2) Darrell Spice Jr. has ported the Linux native Stella to OS/2!

Stella v0.6 (Macintosh) Aaron Giles has ported the Linux native Stella to the Macintosh OS, MacOS.

Stella v0.6 (Unix/X) Stella for X-Windows and Stella for Linux are the bases for many ports of Stella to all different types of operating systems, and are the first available Atari 2600 emulators. Stella v0.7 with many optimizations and improvements will be released shortly. (Check the Stella Homepage for information).

Stella v0.6 / v0.61 (Windows 95/NT) Jeff Miller has ported the Linux native Stella to Windows 95/NT and provided an upgrade.

VCS 2600 v1.0 (MS-DOS) VCS 2600 is a great Atari 2600 loaded with games that supports sound, all cartridge types, eight video modes, and many other features. Unfortunately, it is quite a large download!

Virtual 2600 v0.71 (Linux) Virtual 2600 is a great Atari 2600 that has been ported the the Amiga and is quite popular. Because of personal preference, Virtual 2600 will not be carried on Archaic Ruins, and can be found on its homepage.

Virtual VCS v0.60 (MS-DOS) Virtual VCS is a great emulator that is terribly flawed by its lack of sound. However, most of the 2600's features are implemented, making this an enjoyable emulator.
