Emulators

The Emulation state of the Super Nintendo Emulation system, as of the release of VSMC '97 and SNES '96 for Linux has reached the extent of emulating Chrono Trigger. However, Chrono Trigger is not playable on either emulator as it crashes during the introduction. SNES Emulation also remains slow, although Super PasoFami and Virtual SuperMagicom for MS-DOS seem to do a nice job with many of their optimizations. Sound (SPC) has still yet to have been emulated.

ESNES v0.1 Normal / VESA (MS-DOS)

Multi-Game Doctor II File support has been added, screen captures are saved with file names ESNES000.PCX - ESNES009.PCX (8). Also, joypad switching has been added, (4 & 5), SRAM is now in standard format, Mode 7 effect implementation has begun, and the Actraiser logo among many others show awesome spinning effects. A new parameter (-nirq) has been added to disable IRQs which is useful for The Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Super Star Wars.

SNES '96 v0.5 (Linux/SunOS) Linux and SunOS users can finally rejoice! A freeware Super Nintendo emulator with Mode 7 effects has arrived! Somehow, this port of Jeremy Koot's Windows 95 / Direct-X based emulator is greatly enhanced in both features and speed.

SNES '97 v0.0.0.25 (Linux/SunOS) Linux and SunOS users can finally rejoice! SNES '97 has finally been ported to Linux featuring an incredibly fast ASM core, and many more improvements over SNES '96!

SNES '97 v0.0.0.3 (MS-DOS) The MS-DOS port of SNES '97 is now much faster with a more responsive interface than ESNES, and better performance in many popular games. Mode 7 has been implemented, which was at one time unique to only the Linux port of SNES '97! Mode 7 is mostly complete now!

SNES '97 v0.0.0.31 (Windows 95 + Direct-X / Windows NT) SNES '97 has leaped ahead of both Virtual SuperMagicom and ESNES! Notable performances with Final Fantasy II's airship scenes that completely fail on other emulators! SNES '97 lives!

SNES Professional v0.06 (MS-DOS) The current state of SNES Professoinal is completely unknown, but other than a flashy interface, SNES Professional is almost useless. One interesting aspect of this emulator is that it will show Final Fantasy II's title screen by fading it in at the correct speed and frame rate on a 486!

Super PasoFami v1.3a, v1.7a, v1.0 DX (Windows 3.1/95/Direct-X) Nobuaki's Super Nintendo emulator is one of the longest standing emulators, unfortunatly, a few factors cause it to fall behind others. First, Super PasoFami is for Windows, and has no full screen option. Second, sound is nonexistant of course. Third, the text in most versions is either Japanese or broken English. Fourth, the emulator requires patching, and cracking. Fifth, later versions (v1.7a) may corrupt your Windows directory. For this reason, v1.3a is still provided, and is the suggested version to use.

Virtual SuperMagicom '97.02 Rev(D) (MS-DOS) An SNES emulator really isn't all that great if it is only displayed in 8 colors. This is one of the many problems with the shareware version of Virtual SuperMagicom. Unless you plan on buying this emulator, the Shareware version only serves for testing purposes. Archaic Ruins has a feature on Virtual SuperMagicom under EmuNET Expo. You can view the feature by clicking on the second support page listed above.

Virtual SuperWildCard Beta 8 Release 2 (MacOS) Virtual SuperWildCard is a slow, but promising Super Nintendo Emulator for the Power Macintosh. Since competition really doesn't exist for this emulator, and I am unable to comment on it as I am strictly an IBM-PC compatible user, it cannot be compared to any other emulator.

Virtual SuperWildCard Beta 1 (MS-DOS) Virtual SuperWildCard's DOS counterpart is MUCH outdated, and furthur comment is not necessary. Look for a new version very soon.
