After the novelty of a 10 megabyte Wave file with a low quality recording
of a popular song wore off, copying music to the computer was all but
extinct. Who would want to waste their time on large files containing half
quality music? This attitude was wide spread, until the Internet came
along. Music oriented sites began offering short low quality music clips,
and eventually Real Audio, a real time audio transmission, was created.
Real Audio allowed Internet users to listen to something in real time over
the Internet in low quality. As interest in audio over the Internet increased, MPeG Layer-3 files, music files that are capable of storing long audio tracks with CD quality sound in a fraction of the space, appeared. With this much compression, and this ease of piracy, what will this lead to? Perhaps a shock to the entire music industry, for they never had to deal with piracy on a scale like this! |
